You have been provided with three test tubes. One of them contains distilled water and the other two contain an acidic solution and a basic solution, respectively. If you are given only red litmus paper, how will you identify the contents of each test tube?
Answer: Red litmus paper turns blue in a basic solution. So, dip red litmus paper into each test tube. The one that turns blue contains the basic solution. Now take this blue litmus paper (obtained after dipping in the base) and dip it into the remaining two test tubes. The solution that turns the blue litmus paper red is the acidic solution. The one that shows no colour change is distilled water.

Why should curd and sour substances not be kept in brass and copper vessels?
Answer: Curd and sour substances contain acids (e.g., lactic acid, citric acid). These acids react with the metal (brass or copper) to form toxic metal salts, which can spoil the food and cause food poisoning. Hence they should not be kept in such vessels.

Answer: Dilution of acid is a highly exothermic process. If water is added to a concentrated acid, the heat generated may cause the mixture to splash out, causing burns. Adding acid to water slowly with constant stirring dissipates the heat safely.

Compounds such as alcohols and glucose also contain hydrogen but are not categorised as acids. Describe an activity to prove it.
Answer: Take a beaker and dissolve glucose or alcohol in water. Set up an electric circuit with a bulb, carbon rods (electrodes) and a battery. Dip the electrodes into the solution. The bulb does not glow, indicating no electricity conduction. This shows that they do not dissociate into H⁺ ions; hence they are not acids.
