Quick Revision
OverviewChapter Summary
What is this chapter mainly about?
Answer:
This chapter explains how transport, communication and trade act as the lifelines of India’s national economy. Goods and services must move from supply areas to demand areas, and this movement requires efficient transport. Communication helps people exchange ideas, information and services. Trade connects producers and consumers at local, national and international levels. Together, these systems support economic growth, national integration and global connectivity.
Key IdeaMain Concept
Why are transport and communication called lifelines of the economy?
Answer:
Transport and communication are called lifelines because they connect different parts of the country, help move goods and people, support agriculture and industries, promote trade, create employment, help administration and defence, and make economic development faster. Without transport and communication, production, distribution and exchange of goods and services would be slow and difficult.
Transport
TypesLand / Water / Air
Classification of transport.
Mode of Transport Examples Main Use
Land Transport Roadways, Railways, Pipelines Movement of passengers, goods, raw materials, finished products and fuels within the country.
Water Transport Inland waterways, Sea routes, Ports Cheap and fuel-efficient transport of heavy and bulky goods.
Air Transport Domestic and international airways, helicopter services Fastest transport for passengers, high-value goods and difficult terrains.
Roadways
Topic 1Merits of Roadways
Why are roadways important in India?
Answer:
Roadways are important because they are easier to construct and maintain than railways. They can pass through hilly, dissected and undulating areas. They provide door-to-door service and are economical for carrying small quantities of goods and a few passengers over short distances. Roadways also act as feeders to railways, airports and seaports by connecting them with villages, towns and markets.
Topic 2Classification of Roads
Classification of roads in India.
Type of Road Meaning / Function
Golden Quadrilateral Super Highways Six-lane highways connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. North-South and East-West corridors are also part of this project.
National Highways Primary road systems linking extreme parts of the country.
State Highways Roads linking a state capital with different district headquarters.
District Roads Roads connecting district headquarters with other places in the district.
Other Roads Rural roads linking villages with towns and major roads.
Border Roads Roads constructed and maintained in border areas by the Border Roads Organisation.
Railways
Topic 3Importance
Why are railways important for India?
Answer:
Railways are the principal mode of transportation for freight and passengers in India. They help people travel for business, pilgrimage, sightseeing and daily movement. Railways carry goods over long distances, connect markets, support industry and agriculture, and bind the economic life of the country. They have also been an important force of national integration for more than 150 years.
Topic 4Distribution
What factors influence the distribution of railways in India?
Answer:
The distribution of railways in India is influenced by physical, economic and administrative factors. The northern plains are favourable because they have level land, dense population and rich agricultural resources. Hilly and mountainous areas are difficult because of steep slopes, sparse population and high construction cost. Deserts, swamps and forested regions also create obstacles. Economic activities, industry, agriculture, trade and administrative needs also influence railway development.
Pipelines
Topic 5Pipeline Transport
What is pipeline transport? What are its advantages?
Answer:
Pipeline transport is used to transport crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas and even solids when converted into slurry. Earlier, pipelines were mainly used to carry water, but now they connect oilfields, refineries, fertiliser plants and thermal power plants. The initial cost of laying pipelines is high, but the running cost is low. Pipelines reduce trans-shipment losses, avoid delays and make inland refineries and gas-based industries possible.
Topic 6Major Networks
Major pipeline networks in India.
Pipeline Network Route / Importance
Upper Assam to Kanpur Pipeline Runs from oilfields in upper Assam to Kanpur via Guwahati, Barauni and Prayagraj, with branches to Haldia, Maurigram and Siliguri.
Salaya to Jalandhar Pipeline Runs from Salaya in Gujarat to Jalandhar in Punjab via Viramgam, Mathura, Delhi and Sonipat.
HVJ Gas Pipeline Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur pipeline links gas fields with fertiliser, power and industrial complexes in western and northern India.
Waterways
Topic 7Importance
Why are waterways important?
Answer:
Waterways are the cheapest means of transport. They are suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods. They are fuel-efficient and environment-friendly compared to many other modes of transport. India has inland waterways as well as a long coastline, and a large share of India’s foreign trade is carried through sea routes and ports.
