ASSEB Class 9 notification: The Assam State Secondary Education Board has introduced a significant move for the students of class 9 that will benefit thousands of students across the state. The official notice was released on May 16, 2026. This new directive was meant to clear a long-standing ambiguity in the medium of instruction of the core subjects—general science and general mathematics. In this blog article we are giving you all the details regarding this decision that has come from the board.

According to the new notice, the Board has given luxury to the students to choose their medium of instruction. Even if the student is from a vernacular medium (Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, or Hindi), he/she can choose to study the core subjects like mathematics and science in the English medium.

However, there is a condition in this directive: the school must have a facility to teach these two subjects in English to the student. While talking about facility, it means the school should have  qualified teachers and infrastructure to teach these subjects in the English medium.

Will the students need to change their registration?

Since the registration process of the class IX students for the 2026-27 session is almost complete, the board has clarified that there is no need for any change in the registration process or the student’s registration card. Students who have already registered under the vernacular medium and now wish to study science and mathematics in the English are not required to make any changes in the registration. The Board has clarified that there will be no problem in the future with respect to the student’s registration card.

How will the exams work?

To assure the students and the parents, the board has said that it will capture subject-wise mediums to ensure proper evaluation of the answer scripts. That means even if the medium of your social science and language papers is in Assamese, the general science and the general mathematics answer scripts can be written in the English medium.

How does this matter?

This decision taken by the board is a way to provide a level playing field to all the students. Students in rural and suburban areas may not have access to English schooling, but they wish to have a competitive edge in subjects like science and mathematics. Since competitive exams like NEET and JEE are conducted in English, this move will help these students in building a strong foundation without changing the entire stream.
